How to Prevent Mosquitoes from Breeding in Your Rainwater Tank
Nov 04, 20241 min read
Thirty percent of homes in Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide and Sydney have a rainwater tank installed due to severe droughts in the areas. The news, according to Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), added that these households face problems of controlling or preventing mosquito breeding.
Preferred Approach to Mosquito Prevention
The Department of Health has a set of recommendations for preventing the development and breeding of mosquitoes in residential rainwater tanks.
The institution suggests a regular inspection of possible gaps in the crucial points of the rainwater tank, such as access points, the roof and the main body, and the tank itself for corrosion or other physical damage.
When it comes to treating mosquito larvae, the Department of Health disapproves the use of kerosene and paraffin as they can potentially contaminate rainwater and make it unsuitable for drinking and other domestic purposes. Only s-methoprene is the larvacide recommended by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority for rainwater tank use.
